The names and dates of the Principals are as follows:

William Crotch (1822-1832), Cipriani Potter (1832-59), Charles Lucas (1859-66), William Sterndale Bennett (1866-76), George Macfarren (1876-87), Alexander Campbell Mackenzie (1887-1924), John McEwen (1924-36), Stanley Marchant (1936-49), Reginald Thatcher (1949-55), Thomas Armstrong (1955-68), Anthony Lewis (1968-82), David Lumsden (1982-93), Lynn Harrell (1993-95), Curtis Price (1995-), and Jonathan Freeman-Attwood (2008).

Those of the Presidents are:

The Duke of Devonshire 1824; The Earl of Dudley 1876; His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh 1893; His Royal Highness The Duke of Connaught 1901; Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester 1942; Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales 1985; Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester 1997.

The panel is headed with the name of the Founder: John Fane (Lord Burghersh), Eleventh Earl of Westminster.
