Description
Portrait of Sir David Lumsden. Executed from life in the Duke's Hall, just after the Hall's major refurbishment. By Jeff Stultiens, oil on canvas, 1993.

Portrait of Sir David Lumsden, Principal of the Royal Academy of Music 1982-93. Executed from life in the Duke's Hall, the main concert hall, just after the its major refurbishment. The painting shows three images of Sir David. In the foreground he stands in the upper balcony of the Hall; in the middle ground he is shown on the stage at the harpsichord, performing with violinist Howard Davis, cellist Anna Holmes, and flautist William Bennett. In the background he is seated at the console of the organ with Peter van den Heuvel, the organ builder. Lady Lumsden is also shown seated, in the foreground. The painting is in effect a historic document, showing the placement of the re-hung paintings in the Hall following their restoration, and new orchestral seating and lighting arrangements. The organ was removed in summer 2011.
